“On two visits to Dakhla, I stayed at a hotel facing the lagoon. Nearby was the café and restaurant Bivouac Express. I have eaten inside and also on a covered terrace. Both areas have comfortable cushioned seats and booths. There are several flat-screen televisions. Two LG air conditioners are occasionally, but not always, turned on. Loud music and street noises from outside can be loud and annoying. The waiters need to learn some English or French, as I had a difficult time communicating with my waiter. The restaurant can get busy in the evening, so be prepared to wait for your food to arrive. It might arrive cold or lukewarm. My brother had to have his Penne Bolognaise pasta reheated, and that took five minutes. Another time, the pommes frites (French fries) arrived barely warm. I asked my waiter to have them heated up. After almost 10 minutes, he plopped them on the table, and they still were not hot. I think they might have been heated in a microwave, but they were not hot. The packets of ketchup and mayonnaise would not tear open, so I had to ask the waiter to cut off the tops. Bivouac Express used to be easily reasonably priced, but now it is not, considering all the “extras” and slow, inattentive service. I get the impression of a clip joint. In addition, ice creams, deserts, coffee, bottled water, tea or soda are all available. Bivouac Express is now overpriced, all things considered. But remember, it is in Dakhla, not London, Paris or Marrakech. Expect to pay extra for butter or extra anchovies. I was very disappointed in my Marina salad, which was supposed to have anchovy filets, and it first arrived without any at all. When I ordered, I specifically emphasized that I liked a generous amount of anchovies. I later asked for a few more anchovies, and the waiter brought me exactly three filets. When my bill was presented, I noticed that Bivouac Express had added an additional charge of 10 Dirhams. Unfortunately, the service is often slow, and the food portions are on the small side. Even my salad with three medium shrimps, calamari, and a few anchovy filets had only a few pieces of chopped lettuce. For 75 Dirhams, you would expect more than that small amount. In general, the food is mediocre and nothing special, even tasteless. I ordered a chicken burger and it did not taste like chicken. The café-restaurant opens at 12 Noon and closes at 1 AM. The WiFi signal is not always reliable. There are scattered electrical wall outlets for charging telephones. Bivouac Express is located on Boulevard Mohammed V in downtown Dakhla, Morocco. While attractive and popular, both the food and service could and should be improved.
