“This is an amazing authentic hotel set in a magical town. Moulay Idriss feels like it's straight out of the history books, a film set of 1000 years ago... We saw no other tourists whilst there, locals were respectful and friendly, the food was amazing... Authentic Moroccan delicacies at lower than average prices. Dar Zahoune was a little hard to find, yet locals helped us when they heard the name.. And my, it was worth the climb... It felt like a traditional home, clean and beautifully kept. The views from the rooftop are stunning and the food is excellent... Especially the buffet breakfast. Great care is taken to make you feel comfortable at this magical place, especially if you get to meet Rose, the owner. We had 2 nights to have time to walk to Volubilis, the large site of Roman remains with amazing mosaic tiles still in tact. Both Moulay Idris and Dar Zahoune remain my favourite places in all of Morocco. I highly recommend.”

“We had a lot of fun when our taxi dropped us off and a donkey was waiting to carry our luggage up the stairs of the alleys leading to our riad. Dont try and carry it yourself walking unless you have light bags. Everything was as described, the ladies running the dar were very nice and gave us a lot of advice upon arriving. We decided to dine there on their rooftop terrace, and the food was absolutely delicious!!!! You must absolutely experience it . Breakfast was the best I've had in Morocco. The cook makes her own muesli and it is the best I've ever had. Kudos to the team. Note: their recommendation to walk to Volubilis via the panorama riadi is great, in flag we did it, but it takes 90 minutes to walk there (not the 45 we were told), one way. On the return we walked past of the way back going on the main road, then found a grand taxi. This was perfect . Enjoy!”

“Great little hotel with such great hospitality. They insisted on providing us breakfast even though we were leaving early in the morning. I expected coffee/tea and pastries, what we got could barely fit on the table. So delicious. Same with dinner the night we arrived. Traditional home style Moroccan tajines with every vegetable side imaginable, delicious bread, and of course mint tea with dessert. Couldn’t be happier.”

“We absolutely adored our stay at Dar Zerhoune. We used a travel planner who highly recommended it and we were delighted to have the teams’ help in arranging our guide for Volubilis as well as our local life tour with Hajiba. After three large cities, Moulay Idriss was a breath of fresh air - literally and figuratively. The open air terrace for meals was delightful! We had ordered lunch but ended up being quite late and not really hungry. Faiza quickly whipped up some coffee for us and some delicious sweets, allowing us to catch our breath and relax after a long day. We then spent the remaining afternoon hours with Hajiba learning about local life (if she weren’t busy with Dar Zerhoun I swear she should be an amazing mayor). Dinner was served by Faiza - enough for four people! We loved everything. Hajiba knows where to get the best of everything so she magicked amazing nougat for me from the market, which was such a treat and a help as we were leaving quite early and my Arabic ends at Thank You. You can also see her local insight reflected in the offerings in the house, from the restaurant menu to details like the magic Moroccan black soap offered in the guest bathrooms. Water: Yes, all tourists are advised against the Moroccan water but we appreciated Dar Zerhoune’s efforts at testing the water and decided to trust it. Given the town gets water from the mountains behind it and through the ancient Roman aqueducts, we reasoned it is not navigating the usual Moroccan plumbing. While we had water with us, one drive through the countryside helps one appreciate anyone who is trying to lessen the trash situation. We did not notice any major gastrointestinal effects! In the morning we opted for the Moroccan breakfast: semolina breads/pancakes with a series of toppings, yogurt, the fresh farmer’s cheese (think cottage cheese, not cream cheese) and gorgeous figs. Had we known what we were in for we would have tried to stay more days and do cooking lessons. If you visit, relax on the terrace with a good meal, bring a book, listen to the donkeys bray, tour Volubilis and walk through the market and take a load off. I do recommend packing an overnight bag with you if possible but luggage in Moroccan towns is pretty much the same experience all over - sweating while dragging it up and down lots of stairs. Uniquely here you can ask to hire a donkey. Also parking is on the street, as is customary. Be prepared to pay a parking attendant for parking, as we have found is customary (look for the men wearing neon vests). Truly - thank you Dar Zerhoune for the most relaxing and laid back day of our trip!

During our winter stay, we were especially grateful for the modern heaters, electric blankets, and the wonderfully spacious hot showers—essential comforts when visiting Morocco during the colder months. The tested filtered water was really a nice touch. The rooms are beautifully presented across three floors, each with ensuite bathrooms, traditional decor, and thoughtful touches like air conditioning and heating. The terrace rooms, with their natural sunlight and views of the valley and Volubilis, are especially lovely. The solar-powered hot water and eco-friendly approach are added bonuses. The food at Dar Zerhoune is plentiful, delicious, and excellent value for money. Every meal felt like a warm hug, and breakfast on the terrace with stunning views was a daily highlight. Hajiba and the women running Dar Zerhoune couldn’t have been nicer—they are genuinely kind, attentive, and eager to ensure every guest has a memorable experience. Their hospitality made our stay truly special. Whether you’re exploring Moulay Idriss or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Dar Zerhoune offers comfort, character, and exceptional value.
