Carrefour Market - Ibn Batouta

“Racist security and bad produce. I wanted to make an avocado and tomato dish but most of the produce was looking pretty sad… dried wrinkly chilies [they’re supposed to be fresh], hard as a rock avocados, etc… But I’m running out of time since it’s Ramadan and it’s getting too late to go to another market. So I select a single tomato and one cucumber, take it to the produce guy who weighs it and stickers the bags shut with a barcode. I shop around, select some other things, including a liter of juice. But since the produce is at the front of the store and juice is toward the cashiers, every time I leaned the little rolling pannier cart back, the juice would fall on top of the tomato… so to keep the tomato from being squished, I rearranged my cart. So I wait in line, pay, and go to leave the store. Since they charge for a bag, I usually bring my own. So I have half of my stuff in my crossbody bag and half in a foldable grocery bag. As I’m heading for the escalators and rearranging my bag with receipt and change in hand, some man starts asking me for something. At first, I assume he’s homeless and asking me for cash/alms. I say sorry since I’m inside a mall and am juggling my groceries and wallet. Then the guy keeps talking to me. Turns out he’s security and he tries to get me follow him into a back hallway, at which point, I stop and end up showing him what’s in my bags, including the one cucumber and tomato… This man tried to accuse me of shoplifting/changing prices on TWO vegetables. Get better cameras if you can’t tell the difference between moving something in my cart that obviously falling over and changing the barcoded produce stickers on my items… Also, maybe try surveilling someone other the only Black person in the store!!!! I’ve never had this issue shopping at the local markets or any of the nearby Marjane supermarkets, so that’s where I’ll be shopping from now on.
