“Though there are other food stalls on the Golborne Road, I mostly visit Hassan’s, because I find the alternatives agonisingly quixotic. Sometimes they’re open, sometimes they’re not; sometimes they have the lentil soup, sometimes they don’t; sometimes the owner needs to run an errand and he’s gone for three hours. I think I’ve more often found myself walking away in disappointment from Hamid’s food stall than actually being served any food. By all means go, but I’d recommend seeking up-to-date intel from a friend who lives in view of the road. Hassan’s, on the other hand, is less mysterious. You can reliably get a big ol’ piece of grilled fish, basted in a herbaceous oil, with chips, seasoned yellow rice, salad, and a homemade tomato sauce which will have you wondering what secret ingredient could possibly make it so irresistible. The fried squid is popular, but I go for the classic sea bream, at £12. Hassan’s is also my personal cost-of-living bellwether: the sea bream once cost £7, and the day you could no longer hand over a mere £10 note to the man at the grill, life in Notting Hill became irreversibly more complicated. But hey, it’s still the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. To top it all off, they’ve just started accepting card payment.”
“Horrible place! They don’t even deserve 1 star. Horrendous customer service. Owner just stares at you with a grumpy face and is not welcoming at all. Extremely over priced for the amount of prawns given. Hygiene for this place is also bad. Owner touched my raw fish with his hands and then gave my change back with the same hand without even washing his hand or putting on gloves. Also the small pot you get with your food is literally just a basic tomato sauce and it’s not a special Moroccan chilli sauce, just your average Iceland tomato sauce. Will not go back again. Kass burgers is a lot better and worth the price and good service.”
“Finally made it to this simple yet vibrant place ,have been passing by many times always captivated by great smelling grilled food. Absolutely loved my grilled prawns,my husband had fish tagin, which was huge. Can't wait to return for the seabass!!”
“Hassan Morocco Fish, at the far end of Portobello Road, has been one of my go-to spots for years now. I’ve been coming here since the days when they used to charge £6 for a dish — it’s been at least five years, and the prices have stayed super reasonable. The dish I got most recently was around £11, and for what you get, that’s great value. I always go for the fish fillets — you get two pieces, fries, a generous portion of tasty rice, and a fresh salad with a dip. The fish is lightly seasoned, which I personally love, but if you’re someone who prefers bolder flavors, just know that the seasoning is quite mild. That said, they have sauces on the table and you can always ask for salt, lemon, etc. I went on a Saturday this time, which is definitely their peak time, so I had to wait a bit for a seat. But I really like the casual, shared seating vibe — it feels warm and communal. The staff are always lovely and helpful, even when it gets busy. Aside from the sole, I’ve also tried the sardines which were pretty good. I haven’t yet tried the prawn dishes, but the variety on the menu is solid. Overall, this place feels like proper comfort food — fresh, simple, affordable, and satisfying. If you’re in the area and don’t mind waiting a few minutes for a spot (especially on weekends), I’d definitely recommend it.”
“Great lentil soup. Friendly owner and Authentic atmosphere. Have to come back for some Fish !!”
“It’s a good fish street stall, good price but nothing over exuberant. The flavour and seasoning of the fish certainly could be stronger, I wouldn’t call it characteristic of Moroccan spices. It is good enough, if you want a meal to keep you going at a decent price. I do find the combination of rice and chips a bit heavy on the carbohydrates. The squid was well done but, unseasoned. Staff is good, could smoke a bit more and be warmer, but maybe it’s characteristic with the weather. Small seating area, kept well maintained. Busy enough.”
