“We went there because of all the good reviews. The sparkling water was almost still (it was not served in its original bottle), the descriptions are vague and once you get the dish it’s nothing like you expected it to be. Maybe they should include some photos or more descriptions because « vegetable dish » doesn’t cut it. However, it won’t matter because it looks bad and it tastes bland. The stew doesn’t come with a side like roasted or mashed potatoes, the waitress suggests you get some on the side. If it is suggested, why not include it by default ? At 17€ the dish, it should be… The rabbit stew was served on the bone to make it seem like there was a lot, but you get almost no meat. The banitza is not a banitza, it is more like a samoussa, not layered, just filling enclosed in a flaky dough. My grandmother’s banitza is way better and my mom who’s not even Bulgarian is even better. After eating this, I went to Happy to get something else. Maybe not traditional or authentic, but I know what I pay for. Also, we got a friendly note at the end that the service is not included. It was only written in foreign language (not even in Bulgarian) so I guess that’s what they’re aiming for : Tourists to trap and scam.”
“We had a lovely dinner at Moma and really enjoyed the whole experience. We ordered the traditional Bulgarian appetizers, the Shopska salad, potatoes with dill and garlic, and the yogurt cake for dessert. Everything tasted fresh, homemade and authentic. The appetizers were a great way to try different Bulgarian flavors, the Shopska salad was simple but delicious, and the potatoes with dill and garlic were the perfect comfort side dish. The yogurt cake was a light and lovely ending to the meal. The patio is absolutely stunning and makes the whole experience even more special. The place feels authentic and welcoming, not touristy at all, which was exactly what we were hoping for. A great spot to try traditional Bulgarian food in Sofia. Highly recommended!”
“We had a truly spectacular dinner here. The food was exceptional. Clearly the chef uses high quality ingredients and local dishes cooked to perfection. The menu is vast with lots of different options available and I’d suggest choosing a local wine like a Rubin or Mavrud to complement your meal. Our waiter; Sardor was so friendly and professional and really made us feel incredibly welcome with his warm hospitality. This was our favourite restaurant experience in Sofia, beating many others for overall quality. Highly recommend to all, but best suited to couples and adults without children as the atmosphere relies on quiet conversation versus loud music and entertainment.”
“We went to Moma on a Thursday evening. The food was genuinely excellent and the décor is absolutely gorgeous. However, there was a serious issue with the staff and overall atmosphere on the first floor where we were seated. We cannot speak for downstairs. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what went wrong, but something clearly was not working, and training is definitely needed. We felt half ignored throughout the evening. As travellers who had never experienced Bulgarian cuisine before, we would have appreciated a bit of guidance or enthusiasm, but none was offered. We had barely been eating our starters for five minutes when our mains arrived. The food itself was delicious, but the pacing felt rushed and disjointed, which made the experience strange. Later, after looking at the dessert menu, we said we needed a few minutes. We then struggled to get the waitress’s attention, even after waving twice. We were finally acknowledged about half an hour later. The manager had greeted us warmly at the beginning and later asked how everything was. We honestly could not fully explain what had happened. It felt like a lack of communication and possibly tired or overworked staff who had simply given up. Whatever the cause, it really impacted the evening, which was disappointing. The food was excellent. That makes it even harder to separate the quality of the cuisine from the feeling we were left with. I’ve given 3 purely because of the quality of the food. Unfortunately it was marred by the atmosphere and general service.”
“I looked online for the best Moussaka, and this place was listed. Unfortunately, I did not understand that the dish was more for lunch. It was not available on the menu. I asked for the best dish, Roasted Lamb In A Traditional Style Served with traditional side "drob sarma" cooked lamb liver and rice, bulgarian yoghurt (Печено Агнешко Поднесено дроб сарма, печен сос и кисело мляко) was recommended. I had a 'drunk strawberry' and tried a Banitza first.”
“The decor is stunning very traditional with a modern vibe. Honestly I felt very proud to be a bulgarian and a woman here ❤️ I ordered a favourite traditional rodope dish patatnik with a delicious Bulgarian Sauvignon Blanc. It was delicious 😋. So was the wine - recommended for me too. Personally I like my food piping hot when it arrives but apart from that it was very good. Warm hospitality and Service makes my overall experience a 10/10. Very motivated to go back. I need to try more dishes! Thank you Moma 🙏 Tania 😘”
