“It’s located in an old house with beautiful nostalgic decor and a patio. Cozy, warm, like visiting a relative. We were here for lunch on a Saturday. It’s quite full, with people celebrating occasions. We ordered lamb shank, pork ribs, some sort of minced meat patty, and shopka salad. For dessert we got cream caramel (it’s like a flan) and banana cake. Shopka salad was good (but this doesn’t seem like a dish you can mess up). Honestly I am disappointed with the lamb shank, it was dry and they didn’t put too much gravy on top either. Especially as the waiter recommended the lamb shank when I was deciding between that and the deer shank. The pork ribs and minced meat patty had perfect texture, but again I’d expect more sauce for the ribs. Maybe local preference is different? Both desserts were excellent. The espresso was perfect as well. Overall, I feel that at this price point (comparing to local standard), I’d expect the quality of the food to be better and the service to be more attentive (our local tour guide mentioned the same afterwards, sounds like their quality fell over the years).”
“If you are looking for a true escape from the busy streets of Sofia, look no further than Staria Chinar. Stepping into their beautiful outdoor garden felt like a total retreat—it’s the perfect place to hide away from the city's hustle and the hot sun, providing a peaceful, shaded oasis to relax and unwind. The food and drinks were top-notch; the Shopska salad was excellent and incredibly fresh. I was also very impressed by their drink list, which has an extensive variety of beers and wines. I particularly enjoyed the Zagorka Retro and Stolichno beer, which were perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Everything about the experience—from the lush garden setting to the high-quality food and drink selections—was excellent. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a relaxed, authentic experience in the city!”
“Indeed the place worth recommending. Great choice of wines. Dishes were a mixed experience. All from grill was great. Moussaka was a shame however. It shall be a flagship dish of Bulgaria and tuned to be like cheap bistro dish spoiled with pesto. As long as you avoid moussaka you shall be satisfied ;-)”
“Probably the best food we had in Sofia! Every dish was full of flavor, fresh, and beautifully prepared. The service was friendly, professional, and made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Great atmosphere and an overall fantastic dining experience. Highly recommended! We had lunch there and everything was amazing.”
“The food at Staria Chinar was poetry — I had no idea that Bulgarian cuisine was so delicious and rich in unique flavours, and this place showcases it beautifully. Our waiter, Ivo, was professional, caring, and genuinely knowledgeable; his presence made our visit truly memorable. Try potatoe balls for a fascinating starter, spoil your palate with shopska salad with cow cheese that will take you to the mood, and pick and choose from mains you won't ever forget - my 12h lamb was divine!”
“This is the place to try traditional Bulgarian meat dishes. All the meals were well cooked, with tender, flavorful meat. From the first bite, you can tell it’s a place with a long history and experienced chefs. A must if you like meat and want to try Bulgarian food — if you visit Sofia, don’t miss it. 🇧🇬🥩”
